This stretch of river is great for rafts, kayaks, inflatable kayaks, dories, stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), or canoes. This rock is a combination of hornblende and quartz, and was part of a deep ocean trench around 1.8 billion years ago. Vishnu Schist, which comprises the Ruby-Horsethief canyon walls, is the type of rock found in the Grand Canyon. Petroglyphs can be found 18.1 river miles up a short hike to a beautiful canyon. There are two campgrounds that make up the Lone Mesa campsite: the first is Lone Mesa Group Campsite for booking large groups (the first right after you turn off onto Lone Mesa Campground road) and the second being for individual and small groups of campers. The views of Big Mesa from the park are breathtaking as are the sunsets, sunrises, and late afternoon thunderstorms that roll through the area in the last spring afternoons and during monsoon season. In fact, the Big Mesa trail goes right through the campground along with several other small hiking trails. Lone Mesa Campground off Utah Highway 313, 8 miles from Highway 191, and 20 miles from Moab serves as an excellent basecamp for accessing the fantastic Navajo Rocks mountain bike trail system, Dead Horse State Park, and Canyonlands National Park. Relative solitude, bathrooms, trash disposal, excellent views, and easy access to the Navajo Rocks mountain biking trails, Dead Horse State Park, and Canyonlands National Park.
